Featuring
male and female vocals, violin, guitar, live sampling, and
some of the best guest percussionists in Chicago, Khupera Tum achieves
a totally unique, magical sound. They describe themselves alternately,
depending on the time of day, as "the snow leopard swallowed the lounge
lizard," "art-rock," "funk-punk" and "hip-hop-folk," while their
ever-growing fan base have compared them to everyone from the Yeah Yeah
Yeahs and Sugar Cubes to Reinhardt/Grapelli and Monk/Trane.
No matter how they're described, it's certain that they perform with
passion and precision.
So much so that some people, after seeing this
band play, have asked whether or not Andrea and Darryl lip-sync!
In 2007, Buzz magazine voted Khupera
Tum one of the Top 5 Emerging
Original Musical Acts in Chicago, and they've been winning fans
everywhere. Where is everywhere? Literally everywhere...
One of this band's greatest strengths is that they defy genre-fication.
Khupera Tum has
played live with many performers such as Chicago's Ballistic Edna. So, they can be seen
anywhere: rock, punk and jazz clubs, fairs,
festivals, theaters, art galleries, dive-bars, cafes, restaurants, book
stores, house and loft parties...
Also in 2007, Khupera Tum
nationally released their debut EP, Dawn and
Dusk and locally released the EP, Retro Electro Demo,
which is a
preview of their up-coming full-length debut, slated for release in
late 2008.
Khupera
Tum has
received favorable reviews from the press:
Top Emerging Chicago
Artists
Buzz S&E - Greg Chruscielski
"Khupera Tum has my vote for the top up-and-coming original act in
Chicago...Morphine meets My Bloody Valentine with Gypsy violin..."
A Night on the Town
Better Impaired - Martin Grossman
"Towards the end of the night, I found myself at a little place in
Ravenswood called Silvie's Lounge. As soon as I walked in, I
heard what I assumed was a jukebox playing something cool and obscure.
But then, I walked around the corner. It was a band, a
cool-ass band, and the audience was totally absorbed. Khupera Tum
are unlike anything else I've heard, and I've heard A LOT. I
highly recommend checking
them out."
